Forming a friendship through a mutual appreciation of Grime music that soon turned into a scrupulous and avant-garde approach to the genre’s output, Elijah and Skilliam have quickly established a reputation for themselves within the underground movement. With a Rinse FM residency spanning over three years, and an edition in their legendary compilation series (Rinse:17) the duo are celebrated as the leaders of the new Grime wave.

Elijah & Skilliam have become regulars on the renowned FWD>> line-ups with amazing and uncompromising sets. What’s key about their sets is the sheer amount of digging for new material they do, and their constant willingness to play tunes from new, often relatively unknown producers over more fashionable artists. It is this investigative instinct that led them to launch the Butterz imprint, a label dedicated to releasing quality Grime from the likes of Terror Danjah, Swindle, Royal T, Trim, and P Money. Highlights of the label so far are releasing S-X’s cross genre classic ‘Woooo Riddim’ and P Money’s ‘Boo You’ which have broken out a lot further than the scene they were originally made for. Alongside releasing MP3s and vinyl (a rarity in Grime today) they have also extended the brand into merchandise. The unmissable ‘Black & Yellow’ t-shirts are worn by many a raver at their now infamous Butterz club nights.

While their sets retain the high-octane, aggressive fire you’d expect from grime, they stay away from the hype, war, and clashing that have long served as the scene’s Achilles’ heel. Thanks to this high-concentration music, low-concentration drama approach, the pair have made their Butterz club nights a permanent fixture on Londons nightlife scene with a residency at Cable, with talent showcased from the ever expanding Butterz roster alongside the best from other corners of the wide UK Bass music spectrum. The nights have quickly gathered pace, with offshoots popping up in Sheffield, Bristol, Brighton and Amsterdam.
