Belleruche - Colour 1

Biography —

Belleruche is Kathrin deBoer, Ricky Fabulous & Dj Modest, who write songs, record and play live. Loudly. Kathrin deBoer – vocalist, and bassist, soul influenced vocal style combined with rapid syncopated lyricism. Ricky Fabulous – guitar and bass, plays jazz guitar in a punk way and post disco bass guitar. DJ Modest – turntable, sample pads and laptop, getting stuff wrong in the right way.

With their brand new LP “Rollerchain” forthcoming on Tru Thoughts records, Belleruche have created a more bass heavy, evocative and darker sound in the studio and on stage, whilst still retaining that melodic soulful touch that made us fall in love with the band in the first place. ‘Rollerchain’ will be released on 07/07/2012, and showcases new instrumentation, complexity and and attack that take the band’s core elements to a new level.

A very modern sound combined with classic song writing ability, the album is a collision of haunting vocals, aggressive analogue sounds and bleeding edge electronic production. Back to the beginning though – 4 years ago Belleruche released a handful of extremely limited 7” records on their own Hippoflex label, including the ‘Four Songs EP’. These individually numbered 45’s (with hand-printed sleeves) quickly sold out in the UK’s independent record stores and attracted a cult following in the UK and Europe.

In 2007 Belleruche signed to Tru Thoughts and their debut album ‘Turntable Soul Music’ was released in July of that year to fantastic reactions from fans and the music media, with admiring reviews both at home and abroad. The record became the fastest-selling debut album in the label’s history. The album has been described as “like a weird trawl through a dusty basement full of the best records you’ve never heard of, whilst a voice you can’t quite pin down sings hooks you can’t forget.”

Their second album “The Express” was released in October 2008. The first single “Anything You Want (Not That)” was awarded ‘Single Of The Week’ with iTunes and the album made Number One in the iTunes electronic album chart. With major daytime radio support including plays  by Nemone on BBC 6Music. BBC Radio 2’s Mark Lamarr, also brought them in for a live Maida Vale session for his God’s Jukebox show in May 2009. The “Liberty EP” 12” came out in March 2010, previewing material from album number three and showcasing yet another evolution in the Belleruche sound. It sold out and had to be re-pressed within two weeks.

Belleruche’s third album, ’270 Stories’ was released in October 2010, it immediately gained radio play across Europe and key BBC support from 6 Music, Radio 2 and Radio 1. The band have played live sessions on BBC 6 Music and Radio 4 in the UK, and a Radio 1 interview. In France and Switzerland, radio stations ‘FIP’ and ‘Radio NOVA’ playlisted the album repeatedly, and the band played a live session for Virgin radio in Paris. The band toured the UK, East and West Europe and the USA throughout 2011. They played several showcase gigs at SXSW 2011 in Texas, having received funding from the PRS foundation for new music to visit the festival.
